The style of this painting has moved me into some really cool opportunities. It was my second year part of a design show called Vignettes. The producer and I had become friends and he had asked me to be a part of ’special projects’, which really meant you didn’t know what you were getting yourself into. He gets ideas for things and then tells you how great you’ll be at this vision he came up with. He told me that Lexus was a sponsor for the show and they were going have one of their luxury cars set up in the middle of the room, and he said, “Giselle, your job? Is to paint the car!”
I said, “I’m sorry, what?”
He said, “It’s going to be AMAZING!”
I said, “Sounds amazing, but I don’t know how to do that. I’ve never down that before!”
He said, “Don’t worry about it. Whatever you come up with you will be great.”
Weeks went by and I really tried not to think about it too much because it made me so nervous.
The day of the grand opening for the show arrived. He called me up, “How are you feeling about tonight?”
Me: “Well, the truth is I feel like throwing up.”
Him: “You’re going to be great! People will love it!”
The truth is, I had painted it in my mind about 1000 times, but there was no way I could practice painting on a car.
Driving to the event, my knuckles were white as I gripped the steering wheel. I took a deep breath and flipped on the radio to distract myself from my nerves.
As I was setting up my drop sheet, and getting my paints and brushes ready, I could feel myself getting into my zone. There were people everywhere, the median cameras.
I was ready, so I just got started. It didn’t take long before I had a large audience surrounding me as I painted and cameras in my face. But the coolest part was, I felt completely and totally calm. I even had a great time painting on my hands and knees with all those eyes watching me. I heard later that there were over 2000 people at that event. The car took me 6 hours to paint both sides. Th impact of painting on a car was much greater than any of us expected! A few days later I was in the airport and someone stopped me and said, “Are you Giselle Denis? I saw you on Facebook painting a car! That was super cool! I love in PEI and so this is really cool running into you like this!”
Wow! The power of social media and how word can spread! Painting the Lexus was one of my career highlights.
