This is a hot topic and seems to have so many people worried.
I don’t believe AI will ruin art. Nothing is going to stop AI from moving forward or from moving so fast it makes our heads spin. The way I see it though, the only way to move on with AI in our world now, is to continue making art the traditional way of making art. Just because there are tools out there you can access and use, does not mean you have to access and use those tools.
No Machine Can Replace the Human Hand
No AI can ever replace the human brain, or the human touch, or the human hand creating a tangible piece of art. AI will always be a machine. And a human will always be a human no matter how advanced AI becomes.
I believe that no machine can ever replace what a human can make. The beauty of being a human is that we are flawed. Some would say this is the beauty of AI, that it is not flawed, and that it creates perfection. But the beauty of art making is that it has human flaws. It has that tiny blip or blob of paint that makes you ask, "Did the artist intend for that to be there?"
The Heart Behind Human-Made Art
A human making art means that a human spirit is attached to that piece of art. And that's what makes human-made art so unique and special.
Machines can replace our workplace, but when we take the human out of the workplace, we are taking out the heart.
Productivity is a real thing, and it can certainly streamline business. But there is an element we are sacrificing.
When someone lives alone and goes to the grocery store to pick up a couple of things, they may not see another human at the checkout anymore. Instead, they use a self-checkout, everyone has their heads down looking at their phones to redeem coupons, and then they climb back into their car and drive home... to be alone once more.
Art Is a Way of Life
What does this have to do with art?
Art is not just making a painting.
Art making is a way of life.
The way we talk to strangers at the grocery store. Then we go home and make art with a bit of that human connection we just had.
Art is tapping into our brains and our hearts to create an idea onto canvas, carve it out of wood, write it on a page, or play it on the piano.
We feel.
We play.
We paint.
We sing.
We draw.
We notice.
Art is creating things we notice.
It's creating things we feel.
It's reporting those feelings with colours, with words, with handwritten notes, and with musical notes.
Why Human Creativity Will Always Matter
AI can't feel.
It can appear as though it can, but it's still a machine.
No machine can ever be human.
And no human can ever be a machine.
But if we allow AI to replace our creativity, then we have lost part of ourselves to a machine.
